Amaechi Is Running For Nigeria’s President, Won’t Be Running Mate To Atiku Or Anyone – Aide

In a move that further intensifies Nigeria’s unfolding 2026 political landscape, an aide to former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed reports suggesting he is considering becoming a running mate to any presidential candidate, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking on Monday, the aide, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to brief the media, described the rumour as “false, misleading, and politically motivated.” He insisted that Amaechi remains focused on his own presidential ambition and has no interest in playing a secondary role.

“Amaechi is running for president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is not negotiating for vice president, and he will not be running mate to Atiku or anyone else,” the aide stated. “These stories are being planted by political opponents who fear his growing support base across the country.”

According to the aide, consultations are ongoing, and Amaechi will officially declare his intention “at the right time,” adding that the former Rivers State governor represents “a unifying figure with national appeal.”

The clarification comes amid increasing speculation within major political blocs, particularly regarding possible alliances ahead of party primaries. Analysts say Amaechi’s insistence on contesting as a principal candidate could reshape alignments in both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition.

Amaechi, who previously contested for the APC presidential ticket in 2022, has maintained a significant presence in national political discourse, especially as debates around zoning, party leadership, and coalition-building continue to heat up.

Political observers note that his latest position signals a determination to remain a key contender in what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most competitive presidential races in recent years.
