PDP Suspends National Secretary Anyanwu, Legal Adviser, Other Top Executives Amid Leadership Crisis
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, along with the party’s National Legal Adviser and several other top officials, following escalating internal wrangling threatening the stability of Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Sources within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) confirmed that the suspension was approved during an emergency meeting held late Friday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja. The decision reportedly followed accusations of anti-party activities, insubordination, and actions considered detrimental to the unity and progress of the PDP.
A senior party official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the disciplinary action became necessary after “repeated acts of defiance and gross misconduct” by the affected officers.
“The party cannot continue to function effectively when key officials are working against its collective interest. This decision was reached to restore order and discipline within the PDP,” the source stated.
Senator Anyanwu, who also served as the PDP’s governorship candidate in Imo State’s last election, has been at the center of controversy in recent months amid allegations of factional leadership within the party’s Southeast zone.
The National Legal Adviser and other executives affected by the decision are expected to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee to respond to the allegations.
Reacting to the development, a spokesperson for Senator Anyanwu dismissed the suspension as “illegal and politically motivated,” accusing some NWC members of working to destabilize the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is a witch-hunt orchestrated by a few individuals who fear Senator Anyanwu’s growing influence in the party. The so-called suspension has no basis in the PDP constitution,” the aide said.
The PDP, which has struggled to maintain cohesion since losing the 2023 presidential election, has been plagued by internal divisions between northern and southern blocs, with disputes over leadership positions and control of state structures.
Party insiders warn that the latest suspensions could deepen the crisis further unless reconciliation efforts are urgently initiated by the Board of Trustees and key stakeholders.
As of press time, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary had not issued an official statement, but indications suggest that a formal announcement may be released later today.
