FCT Minister Wike Brags About Court Ruling Stopping PDP National Convention

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has boasted about the recent court ruling that halted the planned national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as a “victory for justice and internal democracy.”

Wike, who spoke during an interaction with journalists in Abuja on Friday, said the judgment validated his long-standing position that the party had derailed from its founding principles.

According to him, the court’s decision was not just a legal matter but “a divine confirmation” that the PDP leadership had ignored fairness, equity, and due process in its internal affairs.

“I have always said that impunity has no place in a political party that claims to uphold democracy. The court has simply told them to go back and do the right thing,” Wike stated.

The Abuja High Court had on Thursday granted an interim injunction restraining the PDP from proceeding with its national convention pending the determination of a suit filed by some aggrieved members who alleged exclusion and manipulation in the delegate list.

Political observers say the ruling deepens the crisis rocking the opposition party, as factions loyal to Wike and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar continue to clash over control of the PDP’s national leadership.

While Wike hailed the ruling as a “necessary correction,” loyalists of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) have accused him of working with external forces to destabilize the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in a brief statement, said the party would appeal the decision, insisting that the convention would eventually hold “in line with the provisions of the PDP constitution.”

The ongoing feud between Wike and the PDP leadership dates back to the 2023 general elections, where Wike, then Governor of Rivers State, openly opposed the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and formed the G-5 alliance of dissenting governors.

With the latest development, analysts predict further polarization within the PDP as Wike continues to assert influence from his current position in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
